Bratislava is located at the foot of the Small Carpathian Mountains. There are a few limited ski slopes near Bratislava (Koliba-Kamzik right by the city, photos
here and Pezinska Baba some 25 km away, photos
here). These are not suitable for demanding down-hill skiers and fill up easily especially on weekends and during Bratislava school holidays. The surrounding forrests do offer some great cross-country skiing opportunities.
Many people from Bratislava therefore prefer to ski in the neighbouring Austria. The nearest Alpine ski resort, Semmering can be reached in about 1.5 hours from Bratislava by car and offers excellent skiing conditions and good value for money.
Most Slovak ski resorts are located at least the same distance (1.5 hours) from Bratislava. Popular resorts are located in various Slovak mountain regions.
